Intro:

Explore the Tambopata National Reserve, which is a nature reserve in the Peruvian Amazon with a surface of 1,478,942 hectares (3,654,550 acres). Tambopata is known for its biodiversity, with 165 species of trees, 103 species of mammals, 90 species of amphibians and 1300 species of butterflies.

Highlights:

When going on this 4-day trip, you will be able to experience the Amazon Forest and its flora and fauna. You will go on boat rides, have amazing views from the Canopy Tower, watch macaws feeding themselves at Chuncho Clay Lick, hike the Floodplain Trail and last but not least visit the Tambopata Research Center.

Day by day:

Day 1  Arrival and acclimation

Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, we will welcome you at the airport and drive you to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in our gardens, we will ask you to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days and leave the rest in our safe deposit.

Later we will drive to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. After a boat ride we will arrive at Refugio Amazonas. After dinner we will be out at the river´s edge at night.

Day 2  Canopy Tower / TRC / Chucho Clay Lick / Overlook Trail

Today we will visit the Canopy Tower, this 25 meter high tower has been built upon high ground, therefore increasing your horizon with amazing views. We will go to the TRC (Tambopata Research Center) by boat. After our visit to TRC we will go to Chuncho Clay Lick. Here we will have the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special mineral rich clays of the riverbank. A hike will lead us to overlooks with magnificent views of the Tambopata winding its way into the lowlands. After dinner scientists will provide an in depth look at the biology of macaws.

Day 3  Macaw Clay Lick / Floodplain Trail / Pond Platform / Night Walk

Before breakfast we will visit the Macaw Clay Lick, here we can view dozens of macaws and parrots congregate on this large riverbank. After visiting the Macaw Clay Lick we will go and hike the Floodplain Trail, which covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees crisscrossed by creeks and ponds. Later we will visit a tiny pond with a platform in the middle. It is a great place to spot waterfowl. After dinner you will have the option of hiking out at night.

Day 4  Macaw Clay Lick / Terre Firme Trail / Palm Swamp Trail

Today we will have the chance to visit Macaw Clay Lick again to view the dozens of macaws and parrots congregate on this large riverbank. After that we will hike the Terra Firme Trail. An entirely different habitat characterized by smaller, thinner trees atop hills and slopes is covered by this trail. In the afternoon we will hike the Palm Swamp Trail, where we will see the aguaje palms. These palms are one of the most important food sources in the rainforest.

Day 5  TRC /  Tambopata River Port / Puerto Maldonado / Airport

On the last day we will get ourselves ready for departure. We will go on the boat towards the Tambopata River Port to get back to the Puerto Maldonado Headquarters. After this we will transfer you to the airport for your flight back.
