Intro:

Explore the Tambopata National Reserve, which is a nature reserve in the Peruvian Amazon with a surface of 1,478,942 hectares (3,654,550 acres). Tambopata is known for its biodiversity, with 165 species of trees, 103 species of mammals, 90 species of amphibians and 1300 species of butterflies.

Highlights:

When going on this 4-day trip, you will be able to experience the Amazon Forest and its flora and fauna. You will go on boat rides, have amazing views from the Canopy Tower, watch macaws feeding themselves at Chuncho Clay Lick and hike the Brazil Nut Trail.

Day by day:

Day 1  Arrival and Acclimation

Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, we will welcome you at the airport and drive you to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in our gardens, we will ask you to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days and leave the rest at our safe deposit.

Later we will drive to Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. After a boat ride we will arrive at Refugio Amazonas. After dinner we will be out at the river´s edge at night.

Day 2  Oxbow Lake / Canopy Tower / Farm visit / Ethnobotanical tour

After breakfast we will visit the Oxbow Lake to paddle around the lake in a canoe or a catamaran, looking for lakeside wildlife. We will walk to the Canopy Tower, where you have the possibility to enjoy the amazing view.

After lunch we will go to a farm where both popular and unknown Amazon crops grow. We will learn about the medicinal and other uses of different plants and trees. After dinner you have the possibility of listening to lectures prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazonas.

Day 3  Refugio Amazonas / Chuncho Clay Lick / Brazil Nut Trail / Mammal Clay Lick

After breakfast we will go to Chuncho Clay Lick where we will have the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special mineral rich clays of the riverbank. Later, we will go on a hike to a old grown patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested for decades, where the remains of a camp used by Brazil Nut gatherers can still be experienced. After this we will walk to a peccary clay lick. Wild rain dorest pigs show up in herds to eat clay. After dinner you will have the opportunity of hiking out at night.

Day 4  Refugio Amazonas / Tambopata River Port / Puerto Mandonado / Airport

On our last day we will get ourselves ready for departure. We will go on the boat towards the Tambopata River Port to get back to the Puerto Maldonado Headquarters. After this we will transfer you to the airport for your flight back.
