Intro:

Manu National Park is a cloud forest in the southern part of Peru, near Cusco. It is the largest National Park in Peru. The Park has one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world because of its geographical location and it is home to over 1000 species of birds.

Highlights:

During this seven-day trip you are going to experience the beautiful cloud forest with its wonderful flora and fauna. You will be able to see various bird species, monkeys, caimans, turtles and other fauna. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to visit a gold mining community.

Day by day:

Day 1  Cusco – Paradise Lodge (bus and hiking)

After an early departure from Cusco, we will travel through the diverse Andean landscape. On our journey it is possible to spot highland birds. We will pass pre-Inca Lupaca culture burial towers before arriving at the colonial-era town of Paucartambo. This town is the gateway to the Manu forests and we will have time to visit the local church and the historic Carlos V Bridge. We will continue to the Acjanaco Pass, the official entrance to Manu National Park. You will spend your night in our comfortable Paradise Lodge.

Day 2  Paradise Lodge – Atalaya – Boca Manu (bus and boat)

Before breakfast we will venture into the forest to observe the cock-of-the-rock as the males perform their daily ritual. After breakfast we will continue the day by driving to Pillcopata, from where we will go the the river port of Atalaya. Here we will board a motorized canoe for the extensive journey along the Upper Madre de Dios River to Boca Manu.

Day 3  Boca Manu – National Park Reserved Zone (boat)

Today we will go on a boat trip along the Manu River as far as the camp established within the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park. During this trip it is possible to observe toucans, macaws and parrots, as well as mammals. The river is home to several species of turtles and black and white caimans. We will arrive at the camp near Lake Salvador.

Day 4  Lake Salvador – Lake Otorongo

Our full day in the Reserved Zone will begin with a 3 to 4-hour hike, along the bank of the Manu River to Lake Otorongo. Here you have the opportunity to climb an observation tower, to be able to see the excellent view. We will return to our camp by canoe and in the afternoon we will explore Lake Salvador from our small catamaran.

Day 5  Salvador Lake – Boca Manu – Blanquillo

An early start today will give us the chance to enjoy a nature walk or visit the lake ecosystem once more. As the sun rises, we will be able to observe birds of prey in the treetops. We will board our boat and travel downstream to Boca Manu, after that we will continue along the Madre de Dios River to Blanquillo Lodge, located close to a macaw clay lick.

Day 6  Blanquillo (boat and hiking)

Early in the morning we will take a boat ride and walk to the macaw clay lick, an area of mineral-rich riverbank clay. We will watch several species of macaws and parrots gather in large numbers to feed. After breakfast we will spend one more day at Lake Blanquillo. Fauna includes giant river otters, caimans and turtles. There will be time to walk the nature trails around the lake and after dark a walk around the lake will reveal how the forest comes alive at night.

Day 7  Boca Manu – Colorado – Cusco (bus and boat)

Today we will take a short nature walk and then board our boat for a 2-hour river trip to the small mining community of Colorado. This is a chance to see how illegal gold mining activities damage local rainforest ecosystems. From there we will continue to Puerto Carlos, there we will cross the river and our vehicle takes us along the Inter-Oceanic Highway back to Cusco. On our way we we are able to view the typical high Andean scenery with fine views of Mount Ausangate.
